Our volunteers have been assisting Karen Krik with her thesis on dung beetles as bio indicators. With Ms. Krik they have been studying the biodiversity of the area by performing entomological research. This project is focused on insects, specifically the dung beetles SCARABAEIDAE: SCARABAEINAE.
Dung beetles are considered bio indicators because of their high level of sensitivity. These beetles can tell us a lot about the environment, including the level of diversity, the health of the ecosystem, flora structure, and soil conditions.
All the insect samples collected are going to be classified and analyzed by the Entomology Lab of the UTPL (Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja), an important national University in the South of Ecuador, classified internationally as a Scientific Research University.
